DWP Pontypridd – Building Vibration Investigation
Client
Department for Work & Pensions
Location
Ty Taff, Treforest
Project Type
Vibration Investigation and Structural Response Analysis
Project Value
£28 million
Scale
Office building accommodating approximately 1,700 desks across 12,350 m²
Project Overview
Occupants at the DWP office in Pontypridd reported unexplained vibration affecting parts of the building during normal operation. The source and mechanism of the vibration were unclear, requiring specialist investigation to determine whether the issue related to building services, external influences, or structural behaviour.
Kimber Acoustics was appointed to undertake a targeted vibration investigation to identify the cause of the reported disturbance and to inform proportionate remedial options.
Scope of Acoustic and Vibration Services
Out-of-hours vibration surveys were undertaken to minimise disruption to building operation and to allow controlled testing. The investigation included measurement of vibration response, identification of dominant frequencies, and assessment of structural behaviour through natural frequency testing.
The collected data was analysed to understand how vibration was being generated and transmitted through the building structure, allowing potential sources to be narrowed and assessed objectively.
Outcome
The investigation identified the most likely source and transmission mechanism responsible for the reported vibration. This enabled the client to explore cost-effective remedial measures based on evidence, rather than speculative intervention, and to manage the issue in a proportionate and informed manner.
