Client
Actiform
Location
Peasedown St John, Bath
Project Type
Healthcare Development – BREEAM Acoustic Compliance
Reported Value
£25 million
Scale
Two new operating theatres and seven day-care bays
Project Overview
The Sulis Hospital extension involved the delivery of new clinical spaces within an operational healthcare environment, with BREEAM certification targeted as part of the wider sustainability strategy. Acoustic performance was a key component of compliance, requiring assessment of both internal noise environments and external noise impact associated with the expanded facility.
Kimber Acoustics was appointed to support achievement of the relevant BREEAM acoustic credits through proportionate assessment, measurement, and verification.
Scope of Acoustic Services
Our involvement included assessment and verification of acoustic criteria associated with BREEAM HEA05 and POL05 credits. This comprised internal noise assessments for sensitive clinical areas, review of sound insulation and reverberation performance where applicable, and prediction of external noise impact using three-dimensional noise modelling.
Access and commissioning constraints required careful coordination with the project team to obtain representative measurements and to align testing with programme and clinical requirements. All assessment and verification work was documented in accordance with BREEAM submission requirements.
Outcome
The required acoustic evidence was successfully delivered despite logistical constraints, and the targeted BREEAM acoustic credits were awarded. The hospital extension was completed in June 2025, with verified acoustic performance supporting both compliance objectives and the functional needs of the new clinical spaces.
The required measurement data, predictions, and supporting documentation were delivered despite logistical constraints. While not all targeted credits were achieved, the assessment work provided clear, defensible evidence to support the BREEAM process and to identify where performance met or fell short of the relevant criteria. The project was completed in June 2025.
